Publications

'For 30 years MRG reports have provided authoritative and unbiased background information on minorities worldwide.' Peace Matters

Our publications represent a unique resource for governments, NGOs, journalists and academics. They offer a compelling analysis of minority issues, include the voices of those communities, and give practical guidance and recommendations on ways to move forward. Through regular coverage in the national and international print, broadcast and online media our publications ensure the issues reach the general public and key decision makers worldwide.

We publish reports, micro studies, macro studies, guides, training manuals, briefing papers and the annual State of the World's Minorities.

Reports

MRG reports are written by experts in their field with a focus on minority rights issues. Linked to our programmes, MRG reports offer thorough examination of the current situation facing minority communities. They track root causes to present day problems to offer practical recommendations on solutions to decision makers, opinion formers and activists.

Micro studies

These studies are essential reading for activists looking to advocate on a particular angle of an issue. Micro studies include a minority rights analysis of the new Iraqi Constitution, which shows the strengths and weaknesses of the process and its impact on Iraq going forward, a focussed look at the minorities both fighting and caught up in the conflict in Darfur with minority rights based recommendations for peace, and an expose of the education system in Bosnia and Hercegovina; how it excludes certain minorities and what needs to be done to improve it to provide fair access to all.

Macro studies

These studies provide an in depth analysis of the situation of a minority group in the context of MRG campaigns. They advocate for a minority rights based approach to the issue, whether focussing on conflict prevention through participation of minorities or on poverty and political will to address it. Case studies giving evidence from minority groups and providing key statistics on their situations are included. Examples of good and bad practice are also considered - our macro study on India juxtaposes minority conflicts across the country with Tamil Nadu, where relative peace has been achieved.

Guides

MRG guides provide essential insight into the workings of international bodies such as the United Nations and the European Union. Including key terms, an explanation of processes and committees and suggestions on continuing to campaign, they are vital practical handbooks for members of minority and indigenous communities and activists working on their behalf.

Training manuals

Aimed at minorities and those working with them, MRG training manuals explain the workings of the human rights system and the best ways to put it to practical use. They are written by experts in the field and include training in specific rights, such as economic, social and cultural rights, and in how to make the most of international institutions such as the International Labour Organisation. The manuals are often produced in conjunction with our partners, and are updated where necessary.

Briefing papers

Our briefing papers give essential background to our active campaigns, including Trouble in Paradise, Disaggregated Data Collection: A Precondition for Effective Protection of Minority Rights in South East Europe and Substantive Equality, Positive Action and Roma Rights in the European Union. They are also linked to specific angles of our programmes work.

State of the World’s Minorities

State of the World’s Minorities is the only annual publication that puts the situation of minority communities firmly in the context of global events. There is a regional overview – focusing on events affecting minorities in the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and the Middle East. It has a unique People’s Under Threat ranking, as well as a table showing which countries are major risers in risk since the previous year.
